It’s the final day of October Bats and I have saved my favorite for last. The Hoary Bat. This gorgeous bat hangs out all over the Americas in the woodlands, munching on moths over open areas and lakes. They are long-distance migrants, snow-birding in Central America and Southwestern United States during the winter and Northern US and Canada during spring and summer. They give birth to twins. Hoary bats are the most widespread species of bat in the Americas. Though their winters are spent in large colonies, they are very solitary, preferring their time by themselves like a 15 year old goth teenager. While roosting in trees (usually by one foot!), they will tuck themselves in the foliage, using the trees leaves like a blankie.
