Good morningReader, These were the days where there were only 5 television channels and whatever was on was what you watched. If you turned the channel and it was in the middle of The Godfather Part II, you had to watch it from that point on. There was no rewind or pause (unless you rented it on VHS). I was also Dad’s remote. Standing at the channel knob: “Wait… okay, next. Next. Next. Wait, go back…” In the Northern Hemisphere, the days aren’t getting shorter, the nights are getting longer. The energy that shifts from the high energy rat race of the sunlit day to the low hum frequency of nocturnal stillness fills me with joy. And yet, there is movement. Things are happening. An underground buzz. Someone has to be operating the television station. Someone is cooking hashbrowns for the truckers and us punk kids at the Waffle House. What about all the campy late-night horror movie hosts making us laugh while we screamed? There is a camaraderie in knowing there were other people up like me that thrive on night. Vampires and Werewolves. Ahhhh-ooooooh!!!
I love the night. I used to stay up as late as I could. Drawing, reading comic books, watching tv, playing video games. And then… The American flag would sway in slow motion as the National Anthem played softly in the background. A slow fade to black would make room for that single drone tone and a rainbow of color bars. This test would signal that it was officially time to go to bed. Not even an episode of The Twilight Zone could broadcast at this hour. But alas, we didn’t want the night to end. So, let’s stay up late and see what the colors of the night bring us.
