“Look! Dad! Mom!”
The high pitched whisper pierced my right ear drum through the sea of low-frequency gasps and “ahhhs” in the surrounding crowd.
Marie and I had been chit-chatting with some other folks to our left about where we had been and where we were headed in our Montana/Wyoming adventure. We were all sitting on the benches in front of arguably the most famous geyser on earth, Old Faithful. Every 35-120 minutes this rare type of hot spring erupts (sort of) like clock-work. However, the excitement wasn’t because Old Faithful was erupting (we still had about 20 minutes left before the next predicted eruption)
No, it was something equally majestic, but a bit more subtle.
Doc pointed to our right and a small herd of wild bison were slowly making their way around the base of the geyser. They took their time walking and grazing across our panoramic view. I couldn’t believe it. It was as if the earth had stopped.
I closely studied these American Buffalos and their gorgeous leisurely stroll. Each step with a purpose, yet with no specific destination. Watching a wild animal at that range sent a gentle fear and invigorating peace throughout my soul. There is something intensely serene about observing an uninhibited animal in its natural habitat. And yet the animal has no idea otherwise. It is simply doing what it does best. Living.

p.s. Yes we saw a grizzly bear too! Check out some of the photos below — Look closely at the 6th one 🙂
