Wicked Wavelengths: My Fun Is Your Fun!

SurpriseReader!

I write this letter to you as I am away from must studio catching some waves on the East Coast with a buddy of mine. The Norโ€™easter hitting the New England area seems to have had an effect on the ocean down here on Folly Beach, SC and Tybee Island, GA as well. The undertow alone has been enough workout for our legs to turn into jelly. Itโ€™s been a blast so far though and I thought I would turn some of this fun around to you. Letโ€™s do a Flash Sale for one of my favorite paintings, โ€œWicked Wavelengthsโ€.

I am giving you a 600 dollar credit on this painting.

Hereโ€™s a little backstory I wrote about this painting:

The epic drives to the beach seemed to take forever. As lovely as it was watching the landscape slowly flatten, โ€œAre We There Yet?โ€ echoed through the car every time a lonely gas station on the side of the road passed by. Dad would respond โ€œJust over the next hillโ€ฆโ€

With the Walkman by my side, I would pop that cassette in and play entire albums back to back as the rocky foothills of middle North Carolina gently morphed into horizontal rows of soybean farms and eventually sandy flats of the coast. The skies opened up wider and wider. Countless other travelers passed by never to be met nor seen again. โ€œI wonder where they are going? Off to the beach too?โ€ I would never know.

A couple of rounds of car bingo and โ€œI Spyโ€ sufficed at times, but there was a bubbling in our core waiting to exploded with joy. We simply could not wait to smell the salty air, get a little toasty skin, and hit the waves. Back to the sound waves of mid-1980s rock would round out the journey.

And finally we landed at our destination. The long waves of the sea mimicked the long journey and those long albums

Add Sprinkles,
-Will

I Don’t Want To Go To Sleep!

Good morningReader,

These were the days where there were only 5 television channels and whatever was on was what you watched. If you turned the channel and it was in the middle of The Godfather Part II, you had to watch it from that point on. There was no rewind or pause (unless you rented it on VHS). I was also Dad’s remote. Standing at the channel knob: “Wait… okay, next. Next. Next. Wait, go back…”

In the Northern Hemisphere, the days aren’t getting shorter, the nights are getting longer. The energy that shifts from the high energy rat race of the sunlit day to the low hum frequency of nocturnal stillness fills me with joy. And yet, there is movement. Things are happening. An underground buzz. Someone has to be operating the television station. Someone is cooking hashbrowns for the truckers and us punk kids at the Waffle House. What about all the campy late-night horror movie hosts making us laugh while we screamed? There is a camaraderie in knowing there were other people up like me that thrive on night. Vampires and Werewolves. Ahhhh-ooooooh!!!

I love the night. I used to stay up as late as I could. Drawing, reading comic books, watching tv, playing video games. And then…

The American flag would sway in slow motion as the National Anthem played softly in the background.

A slow fade to black would make room for that single drone tone and a rainbow of color bars. This test would signal that it was officially time to go to bed. Not even an episode of The Twilight Zone could broadcast at this hour. But alas, we didn’t want the night to end.

So, letโ€™s stay up late and see what the colors of the night bring us.

Weird All In This Together: Why My Dad Called Me Weird

Hey Reader,

Dad called me โ€œweirdโ€ often. From my blue spikey hair, to my cut-off jeans over white thermal long-johns and combat boots, I got this comment often. Always, drawing instead of doing my homework. Skateboarding when I should have been playing soccer. Messing around with my trusty Pentax K-1000 35mm film camera when I was supposed to be studying. I never fit in.

Whenever I was away during college, on a trip, or as an adult on my own, I always made a point to swing by dadโ€™s practice first when coming in to visit my parents in North Carolina. I had come in to spend a weekend with the folks after I had recently moved to Athens, GA. I had my trusty sidekick Rushmore (a scrappy Cairn Terrier mix that I had adopted from my dad’s practice after some bozos abandoned him) with me, pleasantly curled up snoozing in the passenger seat.

The last hour of the trip was easy going with hardly any traffic. I tuned the radio to NPR and to my delight there was a wonderful Iggy Pop interview with Terry Gross of Fresh Air. In the interview Iggy talks about his fascinating beginnings, life, and the early days of garage and punk music. I felt a close connection with some of his experiences.

The interview continued as I pulled into the parking lot of dadโ€™s office. It was almost lunch time and there were a few clients getting various services (rabies vaccination, heartworm treatment, general checkup, etc). I made a point to walk straight to the back to see if there was anything I could do to help out (clean some cages, sweep or mop, etc.) When much to my enjoyment, I heard over the sound system, the Iggy Pop interview. We were serendipitously listening to the same program!

When dad finished up with his clients he came to the back. We hugged and after some quick pleasantries, he immediately asked if I had ever heard of Iggy Pop. With a big grin on my face, I said, โ€œIndeed, I have. Iโ€™m a fan.โ€ He then laughed โ€œHeโ€™s weird!โ€ It was the same tone he used when calling me weird. It wasnโ€™t an accusation or shun, but an endearing interest and intrigue. It ironically made me feel normal. He told me he thoroughly enjoyed the interview (as did I) and I was absolutely thrilled that we had come together via Iggy Pop.

By listening to that interview, Dad made the connection that one can choose an unconventional path and still be happy (and successful). He saw that in me. He realized that the commonality between different paths was what he called my “stick-to-itiveness”. The perseverance. The dedication. The passion to what I love to do.

Dad calling me “weird” was a term of endearment that I wear proudly.

Add Sprinkles,
-Will

P.S. Do you have any “come together” stories? I would love to there them!

The word “weird” comes from the Old English word, “wyrd” meaning “fate” or “destiny”. Over time, it has evolved to meaning something supernatural or someone able to control their destiny (like a witch or sorcerer) and thus has taken on it’s modern definition as something odd or strange.

Beast Mode! Painting, sculpting, animating… apparently I can’t sit still

Hello Reader,

Itโ€™s been a minute since I share some behind-the-scenes sneak peek so I wanted to show you some fun things Iโ€™ve been cooking up lately. This week I hit the ground running with some art projects utilizing a variety of my creative skills. I have entered the special code and pushed my multi-media skills into Beast Mode! Speaking of video games, I have begun work on a video game in my spare? time. (more on that in the future)

From painting, to sculpture, to digital design, and animation, it’s been a wild ride these last few weeks successfully satiating my ADHD and OCD. Everything from painting a bulldog (which I told myself a while back I would never do, hah!) to sculpting a bucket style electrical transformer (to go with the bulldog), animating an opossum for the video game, multiple commissions, and sketching for a new mural.

Recently I was asked about my trajectory as an artist. And you know, it hasnโ€™t been very linear. Some might say itโ€™s been all over the place through the years, and I am okay with that. I love that. Art is a process. Itโ€™s a journey. It isnโ€™t the destination. I simply LOVE creating.

-Will

A donut and bat walk into a bar…

Hey Reader,

I turned 50 earlier this month. As with any birthday, itโ€™s always a time of reflection and introspection. I have this deep-seeded need to make people laugh (or at least smile). I think it comes from my dad? He was a jokester in a very thought-provoking way. You would slap your knee while pondering the absurdities of life. Clearly that stuck with me.

Through my paintings, I like to weave a bit of a yarn: A screaming bat being blessed by a donut as a halo surrounded in gold leaf. An initial play on religious icon paintings, it twists the narrative around by featuring a maligned, yet natural creature like the bat as a saint. A donut (a food that almost everyone craves) as a halo hovers above. The twist? Which is good and which is evil? The bat is a part of this world. An evolved natural creature and a necessity for our ecology (pollination, natural pest control, seed dispersal, etc.) The common donut, on the other hand, is a highly processed, man-made sugary treat with all the makings for an unhealthy life choice.

At the end of the day I just want to watch some bats and eat a donut. The painting is simply a screeching bat with a donut. Surreal. Funny. Smile-inducing at worst. Laugh out loud, thought provoking at best. What do you think?

Everyone is Welcome at This Party

Hello Reader,

Dad famously didnโ€™t care for chocolate. โ€œItโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like it, itโ€™s just not my go-to.โ€ This drove Mom crazy of course because she loves chocolate. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, molten lava chocolate cake (with a scoop of ice cream) and of course death by chocolate cake are absolute heaven for mom. Us kids definitely got Momโ€™s side gene when it comes to this versatile culinary creation.

However, one of my favorite quotes from Dad when confronted with this chocolate conundrum was, โ€œWell, thatโ€™s why they make chocolate and vanillaโ€ฆ and Neapolitan.โ€ We are different. Equal, but different. Some like their hair short, some like their hair long. Some love the color pink, some prefer a cooler tone, like teal. Some think the pilot episode of Miami Vice is the best episode, others feel the Season 3 opener starring Liam Neeson and Jeff Fahey reigns supreme. ๐Ÿ™‚

We are all on this party planet just trying to do the best we can with what weโ€™ve got. I like the concept of inviting instead of exclusion. The party where everyone is welcome. Those that like chocolate, will scoop out chocolate. Those that like vanilla, will scoop out vanilla. Those that like strawberry will scoop out strawberry. And those that like it all, will indulge in all three.

This is what the painting , โ€œParty Waveโ€ represents. Itโ€™s the invitation. The ice cream cone is a neon welcome sign alerting โ€œall are welcomeโ€. Letโ€™s catch these crazy waves of life together!

One Donut Later, He’s Demanding a Title

Hey Reader,

His compressed and hunched body may seem grotesque to some. His cryptic scurry might seem like some horrible monster in a scary movie. To me, there was beauty and inspiration. He knows no different. It is all he has known. And after it all, he is simply a playful, fun-loving creature of the world. No more, no less.

By now, you may have heard of Jimothy, the sweet raccoon hanging in the neighborhood streets of Seattle. Jimothy lives with short-spine syndrome. With some backyard low-grade footage, he playfully scurries across the screen like a mythical cryptic. Immediately he took the internet world by storm, peaked our curiousity, and has melted our hearts. Jimothy is a testament to natureโ€™s perseverance, beauty in all forms, and an extension of humanityโ€™s wonderful ability for empathy.

As an advocate for the downtrodden and lover of raccoons, this wonderful muse is right up my alley (trash cans included!) I was immediately inspired to celebrate Jimothy in all his glory, and blessed him with my signature donut halo. I do need help titling the painting. I have a few ideas rolling around in my head, but wanted to see what you could come up with!

Donuts, Drama, and the Movie That Started It All ๐Ÿฉ๐ŸŽฌ

Hello Reader,

Sweet Cinema Sunsets is officially live and out in the wild. It was a beautiful evening shared with new and old friends alike. The evening was spent chatting about favorite movies, impeccable scenes, and iconic actors.

I thought I would share my official Sweet Cinema Sunsets artist statement:

In a world where donuts and other sweets reign supreme, tragedy and comedy coexist in perfect harmony.

I revel in the magic of movies. Movies are more than entertainment; they are an experience I immerse myself in, savoring every moment. Everything from โ€œHowโ€™d they do that?โ€ to โ€œThat shot is gorgeous!โ€and of course my wifeโ€™s favorite: โ€œOh thatโ€™s so and so, they are in that other movie with that other actor who was inโ€ฆโ€ You get the picture. Everything about the movie experience is near and dear to me. Itโ€™s a massive team effort to put even the worst ones together. Itโ€™s truly remarkable how these wonderful stories are brought to life on celluloid.

My first movie experience was our dad taking the whole family to see Raiders of the Lost Ark at the Flick in Shelby, NC in 1981. From that moment on the moving image had a hold on me. Going to the movies all the time with my siblings, friends, even by myself. I love it all.

I couldnโ€™t wait to get my hands on my dadโ€™s camcorder at family functions. While working out at his office during slow times, I would sit at the front desk sketching out characters and drawing In the corners of notepads, turning them into flip books. While in art school studying painting, I discovered a massive love for Super-8 filmmaking โ€“ shooting, developing, and editing claymation and art-house style films. One of my painting class assignments for the word โ€œmovementโ€ was a large abstract painting of one of my Super-8 cameras.

With these works, my passion for filmmaking and cinema shines brightly. Iconic scenes featuring my own unique humorous take are mixed with select pieces from some of my โ€œanimated paintingsโ€ which consist of a looping animation of individually painted frames. Please join me in celebrating one of lifeโ€™s truly magical inventions: Cinema!โ€‹
